Alfonso Cuarón, Anonymous Content drama Ascension greenlit at Apple TV

Apple TV has commissioned a psychological horror series titled Ascension from Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón and LA-based production company Anonymous Content.

The one-hour project, starring Caitríona Balfe (Outlander, Belfast), is inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days and follows a documentarian and recently divorced mother who uncovers insidious secrets when making a film about a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension.

Anonymous Content and Cuarón, who has an overall with Apple TV through his production banner Esperanto Filmoj, have previously made limited series Disclaimer for the global streaming service. Anonymous Content also produces the upcoming Apple TV dramas Neuromancer and 12 12 12.

Natalie Erika James (Apartment 7A, Relic), Christian White (Apartment 7A, Relic), Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón are writing Ascension, with James and White serving as co-showrunners.

Apple Studios serves as the studio, with Esperanto Filmoj’s Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz executive producing alongside Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón. Other exec producers include Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden, in addition to James and White.
