Kate Del Castillo bags Boomdog deal

Kate Del Castillo has starred in several Spanish-language hits

Endemol Shine Boomdog (ESB), the Mexican production unit set up by Endemol Shine North America and local prodco Boomdog, has signed an overall development deal with actor Kate Del Castillo’s Cholawood Productions.

The two parties are exploring scripted and unscripted development opportunities in both Spanish and English. Endemol Shine Latino executive VP Flavio Morales will oversee all programming along with the Cholawood team.

Cholawood Productions is owned by Del Castillo, Latin entertainment executive Carmen Cenrvantes and Emmy award-winning journalist Jessica Maldonado.

Del Castillo is known for starring in telenovela The Queen of the South (La Reina del Sur) on Spanish-language US net Telemundo, as well as producing and starring in Netflix productions The Day I Met El Chapo and Ingobernable.

ESB CEO Alejandro Rincón said: “There is no bigger name in our industry than Kate Del Castillo. We are thrilled to be developing content with Kate and her team that she can both produce and star in. We already have some very promising projects that we will be bringing to the marketplace in the near future.”

Del Castillo added: “I’m excited to unite with Endemol Shine Boomdog. We are here to create a new narrative empowering the Latina and Latino communities. It’s time for us to steer away from stereotypes and clichés.”

ESB recently announced a production and development deal with Mexican broadcaster Televisa, which included the record-breaking launch of singing competition format The Masked Singer. It also recently licensed musical drama Súbete a mi Moto (15×60’), coproduced with  Somos Productions and Piñolywood Studios, to Amazon Prime Video.

Elsewhere in Latin America, Endemol Shine Brazil has agreed a deal with Globosat’s GNT network for a local version of its Extreme Makeover: Home Edition format.

Casting is underway in Brazil, with the series, presented by Otaviano Cost, is set to air in 2020. This follows Endemol Shine North America bringing the format back in the US after a seven-year break, with Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) on board as host for HGTV.
