Amazon, RTVE set sail with Boundless

Amazon Prime Video has teamed up with Spanish pubcaster RTVE to develop original drama series Boundless, about an epic 16th century voyage.

The 4×60’ series follows the journey of Juan Sebastián Elcano and Ferdinand Magellan, who set sail from Spain in a bid to prove the Earth is round.

The big-budget production is set to begin filming this summer in locations include the Dominican Republic, the Canaries and the Basque country, with maritime scenes being filmed at the UK’s Pinewood Studios.

The show’s makers are building replicas of two of the ships that set out, the Victoria and Trinidad, and will use an existing replica of the Nao Victoria, the first ship to sail around the world and the only one of the five vessels that made it home.

Boundless is a Mono Films and Kilima Media production with Simon West directing and Miguel Menéndez de Zubillaga producing. The series is set to premiere on RTVE in Spain and Amazon Prime in the UK, US, Spain and Latin America in 2021.

Ricardo Cabornero, head of Prime video content at Amazon Spain, said: “We are excited to participate in a project of this scale in which one of history’s most incredible journeys will be brought to many people around the world through Amazon Prime Video.”
