ABC offers Mandarin shows online

The children’s department at Australian public broadcaster ABC is set to begin offering Mandarin versions of some of its most popular preschool shows online.

Shows including Peppa Pig will be voiced in Mandarin for ABC’s online services

From January 28, catch-up services ABC iview and ABC Kids iview will celebrate the Chinese New Year by adding Peppa Pig, The Octonauts, Peter Rabbit and Australian/Chinese copro Hoopla Doopla! voiced in Mandarin.

Almost a quarter of Australian’s speak a language other than English at home, with Mandarin the most popular. It is also established as an important part of the language curriculum in Australian schools.

Seven Mandarin episodes of each title will be available at launch, with new episodes added daily throughout February. In addition, three Mandarin episodes of Hoopla Doopla! will be available to schools down under.

The English versions of each episode will be offered simultaneously with the Mandarin programme on ABC’s catch-up services.

“ABC Kids aims to provide Australian families with trusted programming that reflects the world around them. Mandarin is one of the most popular and fastest growing languages and we can’t wait to see how Australian preschoolers engage with our trial on ABC iview and ABC Kids iview,” said Rebecca Heap, ABC’s head of programming and digital.

Based on audience feedback, and subject to programme availability, ABC Kids said it hopes to trial preschool titles in additional languages throughout 2017.
