US network The CW has confirmed the forthcoming eighth season of supernatural drama series The Vampire Diaries will be its last.

A panel featuring the show’s exec producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec made the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday.

The series is produced by Bonanza Productions in association with Outerbanks Entertainment, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros Television and CBS Television Studios.

It debuted on the CW in 2009 and follows the life of a teenage girl who falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire.

The 16-episode eighth season of The Vampire Diaries will premiere on October 21, while the airdate of the series finale will be announced at a later time, The CW said.
