Syfy, Spielberg enter Brave New World

US cablenet Syfy is working with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television to develop a drama based on Aldous Huxley’s classic novel Brave New World.

First published in 1932, Brave New World has been ranked fifth among the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by US publishing company Modern Library.

The novel is set in a world without poverty, war or disease, where mind-altering drugs, free sex and rampant consumerism dominate.

Syfy and Amblin previously collaborated more than a decade ago on miniseries Steven Spielberg Presents: Taken.

Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of Amblin will executive produce the series, while Les Bohem (Taken) will write the screenplay and also executive produce. Universal Cable Productions will serve as the studio.

Dave Howe, president of Syfy and Chiller, said: “Brave New World is one of the most influential genre classics of all time. Its provocative vision of a future gone awry remains as powerful and timeless as ever.”

Syfy, which yesterday greenlit a series based on Lev Grossman’s best-selling fantasy books, continues to bolster its drama offering, with a slate that also includes The Expanse, Hunters, Krypton and Incorporated, a pilot for a thriller from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
