Super Channel develops Bandit Queen

Canadian pay TV network Super Channel is developing a factual show that explores the life of an Indian bandit who subsequently became a politician.

Phoolan Devi: Life and Legacy of the Bandit Queen is being written and directed by Hossein Fazeli (Women on the Front Line), with Jack Silberman producing.

It tells the story of an illiterate village girl who was the subject of the largest manhunt in Indian history and then became one of the first low-caste women to be elected to the Indian parliament.

The show is one of five factual projects being supported by the development fund of Super Channel, which is owned by Edmonton-based Allarco Entertainment. The broadcaster operates eight channels across Canada that offer movies, series and documentary programming, as well as an on-demand service.

The channel’s latest round of funding also includes 15 feature films and two series, details of which are yet to be announced.
