Pop picks supergroup show

American Supergroup will hit screens this year

American Supergroup will hit screens this fall

CBS and Lionsgate’s US joint-venture cablenet Pop has picked up a music competition format that seeks to uncover the best new band in the US.

American Supergroup (ASG) will begin airing this fall on Pop before going on to appear on Viacom-owned cablenet MTV Live (formerly known as Palladia) and VH1 Classic.

ASG involves selecting 25 finalists to form five bands of five members each – a guitarist, drummer, bass player, keyboard player and singer – from across a range of popular music genres.

A panel of established music experts helps the bands, and audiences participate by voting for their favourites on social media platforms and an ASG app.

The show entered production in Nashville earlier this year and its producer Josephson Entertainment has recruited music, TV and film exec Anastasia Brown as an executive producer.

“Thousands of people sent in audition material and we are pleased the ASG website has received more than two million visitors,” said exec producer and Josephson Entertainment founder Barry Josephson.

LA-based talent agency Creative Artists Agency holds exclusive worldwide rights to the show and launched the format at MipTV earlier this year.
