BBC unveils next-generation iPlayer at FM2007 FM2007 NEWS: The next generation of the BBC's iPlayer is now live on the internet, offering not only downloading services but also live streaming, and is now available on Apple and Linux systems as well as to Microsoft users. ![]() The BBC will kick off a hard marketing launch on Christmas Day, Huggers said, with the advertising slogan "Making the un-missable un-missable." Huggers also announced that the next step for iPlayer will be its television launch on the Virgin Media television network. "This is going to be a fabulously exciting opportunity for the consumer to have direct access on a TV set to all that programming that today is available on a PC through iPlayer," he said. The BBC was actively pursuing partnerships with other media providers to get the broadest reach possible, Huggers said. "We're very interested in partnering with the industry. We want to make sure that iPlayer on television becomes available on more platforms than just Virgin Media, and that all our audiences and TV licence payers get as much access to our product as possible." The iPlayer allows users to watch BBC programmes from the last seven days. They can choose the programmes from an alphabetical listing, by date, by channel or from a genre listing. Huggers said the BBC's interactive radio player had also been integrated into the iPlayer, and also told FM2007 delegates how the iPlayer would work alongside VoD service Kangaroo, recently unveiled by BBC Worldwide, Channel 4 and ITV. "The iPlayer is the public service broadcaster's way of maximising value to the licence fee payer by offering a seven-day catch-up; Kangaroo is a commercial service with other UK broadcasters," he said. "After the BBC shows' seven-day catch-up windows expire, Kangaroo picks them up, so the two services will never offer the same content at the same time."
