KiKa catches teen drama Avatars

MIPCOM: German public service children’s channel KiKA has picked up free-to-air broadcast rights to teen drama The Avatars.

The 52×24’ series, coproduced by Spain’s Boomerang TV Group, Fly Distribuzione and Brave Films, first aired on Disney Italia in late 2013 and is now set to launch on Rai Gulp Italia. The show will debut on KiKa next season.

The series has also been sold to AMC Networks International Central Europe (fka Chello Central Europe) for Hungary, Romania, Moldavia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The live-action drama follows group of 15-year-olds whose ambition to turn into rock stars takes off when they create a virtual band, forcing them to lead parallel lives.

Targeting the international market, the drama was shot in Madrid entirely in English, and features a cast picked in New York, including emerging star Tyler Young in the lead role.

The show is distributed internationally by Boomerang TV International and Onza Distribution.

Earlier thjs year, France’s Lagardère Studios took an 81% stake in Boomerang TV, which is behind a string of Spanish drama hits, among them The Time in Between (El Tiempo entre Costuras), Mum Detective (Los Misterios de Laura) and daily dramas The Secret of Old Bridge (El Secreto de Ponte Viejo) and Acacias 38.
