Lúcia Araújo will depart the network in December having led the channel since 1999. João Alegria, currently joint manager of Futura, will replace her as general manager.

Araújo is credited with bringing the channel to audiences of millions in Brazil and fostering relationships with independent producers, local universities and non-governmental organisations.

Under her leadership, Futura became the first channel in Latin America to join the Why Democracy? and Why Poverty? media events, which eventually reached more than 70 broadcasters around the world.

Prior to joining Futura, Araújo was an editor at TV Globo and also held editorial roles at TV Bandeirantes and TV Cultura in Brazil. She will now focus on releasing a novel next month and on other projects in the areas of culture and education in Brazil and abroad.
