Online television venture Aereo is set to launch in Boston next month, as CBS threatens legal action against the company.

Customers who have pre-registered with Aereo will be able to stream local affiliate stations over the internet from May 15, with the service being made available to everyone in Boston at the end of the month.

“Consumers deserve more choice and flexibility in how they experience television and Aereo provides them a high-quality, rationally priced alternative,” said Aereo CEO and founder Chet Kanojia.

In response to the news, a CBS spokeswoman tweeted that CBS would be prepared to sue the company for “stealing” the company’s signal.

Yesterday, CBS invested in technology company Syncbak, which is focused on giving US broadcasters new content distribution opportunities on emerging platforms.

CBS was part of a group of US networks who attempted to sue Aereo for copyright infringement last year, a case that was later rejected by a court.
