BBC’s Cry attracts ABC’s attention

ABC in Australia has come onboard a forthcoming BBC1 psychological drama starring Jenna Coleman (Victoria, Doctor Who).

The Cry is adapted from the novel by Helen FitzGerald

The Cry (4×60′) is being filmed in and around Melbourne in Australia and Glasgow in Scotland, where producer Synchronicity Films is based.

Written by Jacquelin Perske and adapted from the novel of the same name by Helen FitzGerald, the series chronicles the collapse of a marriage in the aftermath of a tragedy and explores the myths and truths of motherhood.

The cast also includes Ewen Leslie (Top of the Lake), Stella Gonet (The Crown), Sophie Kennedy Clark (The Danish Girl) and Australian actors Asher Keddie (X Men: Origins) and Alex Dimitriades (Seven Types of Ambiguity).

The series is being supported by Film Victoria and Creative Scotland. UK-based DRG holds the distribution rights having agreed a sales deal with Synchronicity Films last year.

Stuart Menzies and December Media are the local Australian producers. The series has previously received funding from pay TV platform Foxtel in Australia, although ABC is the Australian broadcaster.

It is the first scripted television commission for Synchronicity Films, which was set up by creative director and MD Claire Mundell, a former executive producer at BBC Drama and head of CBBC Scotland.
