Wattpad makes Wise move in Brazil

East Los High ran on Hulu for five seasons up to 2017

Canadian digital storytelling platform Wattpad is partnering with East Los High producer Wise Entertainment to turn Portuguese-language stories from its platform into TV series and films for Brazil.

The first-look pact, Wattpad’s first major development deal in Latin America, will see Wise develop standout teen and youth projects written in Portuguese by Wattpad creators for Brazilian audiences.

Wise Entertainment also runs an IP incubator in the country and will work the projects up with local writers and producers.

Wise Entertainment is the latest international entertainment company to strike a deal with Wattpad. The company has deals and projects in development with partners spanning North America, Europe, and South-East Asia.

Companies like Sony Pictures Television, Viu, Mediacorp, NL Film, Mediaset, Entertainment One, Lagardere Studios, iflix, Syfy, Huayi Brothers Korea, Bavaria Fiction, CBC and others currently work with the service.

Wattpad is producer on Hulu’s Emmy-nominated series Light as a Feather, from author Zoe Aarsen, and the Teen Choice Award-winning film and best-selling novel After from Anna Todd, both of which originated on the service.

Netflix’s global hit film The Kissing Booth also started as a Wattpad story from writer Beth Reekles.

East Los High aired for four seasons on US streamer Hulu until 2017.
