Ziwe lands Showtime series

US cablenet Showtime has placed a straight-to-series order for an as-yet-untitled variety series starring and executive produced by comedian Ziwe.

Ziwe

Produced by A24, the series will include interviews and sketches, including unscripted real-world encounters between members of the public and the writer, comedian and performer, whose full name is Ziwe Fumudoh.

The order comes after Ziwe has written for Desus & Mero and Our Cartoon President on Showtime. She also hosts an online show in which she invites friends and celebrities to participate in what Showtime described as “comically uncomfortable conversations about race.”

Ziwe began her comedy career as intern for Comedy Central, before going on to write for The Onion and The Rundown with Robin Thede.

Vinnie Malhotra, executive VP of non-fiction programming at Showtime Networks, said: “She has turned all of our heads here at Showtime and we’re excited to be the home for her new series as she continues to grow her edgy and hilarious brand of commentary on race, politics and everything in between.”

The order continues the partnership between Showtime and A24, with the latter’s forthcoming comedy series Moonbase 8 premiering on the cablenet on November 8.
