Funny Woman is a Sky comedy drama about a young woman from Blackpool, played by Gemma Arterton, who finds her comic voice in the male-dominated world of the 1960s sitcom, going from beauty queen to comedy superstar.

Set during the cultural explosion of the 1960s and based on the Nick Hornby novel Funny Girl, it also stars Clare-Hope Ashitey, Arsher Ali and Alexa Davies and is produced by Potboiler and Rebel Park Productions, in association with Sky Studios.

Available to watch on Sky On Demand and Now, Funny Woman was adapted by actor, writer and producer Morwenna Banks, who has written and performed in a number of hit comedies for TV and radio since the 1990s. Now on the writing team of Apple TV+ drama Slow Horses, she has also voiced characters in a number of hit animated series, from Peppa Pig to Monkey Dust.

C21FM spoke to Banks and Tilusha Ghelani, commissioning editor for comedy at Sky Studios, about the importance of female-led content, how the experience of women in comedy may have changed since the 1990s and what Tilusha looks for in a Sky original.
