TV Globo director Soares adds Estúdios Globo lead role to remit as Waddington exits

Amauri Soares, currently director of Brazil’s leading broadcaster TV Globo, has added director of Estúdios Globo, the Brazilian giant’s production centre, to his remit.

Ricardo Waddington, in charge of the studios since 2020, has decided to end his time at the company after 40 years.

“It was natural to choose Amauri to join the competent team formed by Ricardo and advance our ongoing project to modernise and strengthen Estúdios Globo as the largest audiovisual creation and production centre in Brazil, and one of the largest in the world,” the CEO of Globo, Paulo Marinho, said.

Soares and Waddington will work together during a transition period, until in June the former will take command of Estúdios Globo permanently.

Marinho made it clear that Estúdios Globo and TV Globo will continue to operate as independent units within the Globo structure.

Waddington was assistant director, programme director, genre director, director of the production company and director of Globo Estúdios during his four decades at Globo.

For his part, Soares joined Globo’s journalistic team in 1987 and became executive director of Central Globo de Jornalismo. After six years as executive director of Globo Internacional in New York, he returned to Brazil where he was director of programming for the last seven years.

With the integration of the companies, Soares assumed the direction of the TV Globo channel.

In his new combined role, he will put “his deep knowledge of the Brazilian public and his vast experience in the audiovisual sector at the service of all Globo’s platforms and channels,” Marinho said.

In other news, Globo has also started recording Land and Passion (working title), the channel’s next primetime telenovela to be released to the international market.

The production is from Walcyr Carrasco, author of hits such as Hidden Truths, Sweet Diva and The Other Side of Paradise, inspired by his own childhood to create the plot that takes place in Mato Grosso do Sul, in the midwest of Brazil.
