Profiled: The Black Man, which launched on February 12 on Discovery+, examines the origins of widespread stereotypes that have impacted the lives of black men in America for centuries.

Produced by A Smith & Co Productions with the Oprah Winfrey Network, it aims to show the difficulties black men have faced, both in the past and present day, while also highlighting and celebrating their triumphs and resilience with a mixture of historical footage, real-life testimony and commentary from an array of renowned thought leaders.

The four-part docuseries explores and debunks a different stereotype each week, with the stereotypes being that “black men are dangerous,” “black men are absent fathers,” “black men devalue black women” and “black men don’t cry.”

Kristen V Carter, one of the show’s executive producers, spoke to Nico Franks about the origins of the docuseries, why she hopes the show will change the way people interact with black men in their day-to-day lives as well as her role as head of community engagement and career development for HUE You Know, a production resource group for professionals of colour.

C21FM is live 24/7, with a block of interviews starting at 10am BST every day HERE.
