Swedish reboot of Wallander lands at BBC amid European and NA sales

Gustaf Skarsgård plays the title role in the new Wallander

The reboot of Scandinavian crime drama Wallander has found a UK home at the BBC.

Produced by Jarowskij/YellowBird, part of Banijay Nordic, the three-part Swedish-language adaptation for TV4 will be available to UK audiences on BBC iPlayer and BBC Four.

Banijay Rights, the global distribution arm of Banijay Entertainment, is distributing the series, in which Vikings star Gustaf Skarsgård takes on the role of the eponymous detective.

Banijay Rights has secured further international sales to Wallander across North America and Europe.

MHz Choice has licensed the series in the US and Canada, whilst in EMEA Wallander has been acquired by NPO in the Netherlands, VRT in Belgium, HRT in Croatia and LNK in Lithuania.

Commissioned by TV4 in collaboration with Banijay Rights, ARD Degeto, Film i Skåne and Ystad Österlen Filmfond, the first season of the new Swedish-language adaptation comprises three 90-minute films.

Written by Antonia Pyk, the series is directed by Molly Hartleb (Riding In Darkness, Top Dog) and the duo behind Aniara and Egghead Republic, Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja, and is produced by Glenn Lund.

The original Swedish series and film adaptations aired between 1994 and 2013, achieving wide international success, including in the UK on BBC Four. In addition, a UK miniseries adaptation starring Kenneth Branagh aired on the BBC.
