Succession wins three Golden Globes as HBO, HBO Max dominate TV awards

HBO’s Succession won the Gold Globe for best drama

HBO and HBO Max dominated the TV section of the Golden Globes last night, with the WarnerMedia-owned cablenet and streamer picking up six of the 11 awards dedicated to TV series.

HBO’s Succession won the gong for best drama series, beating Netflix sensation Squid Game and French mystery thriller Lupin.

Succession won three awards in total, with Jeremy Strong picking up the award for best actor in a drama series, beating Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae and Lupin’s Omar Sy, and Sarah Snook winning best supporting actress in a series, limited series or TV movie.

Meanwhile, Kate Winslet, star of HBO’s Mare of Easttown, won the award for best actress in a limited series or TV movie, while Jean Smart took home the prize for best actress in a musical or comedy TV series for her perfromance in HBO Max dramedy Hacks.

Hacks also picked up the award for best musical or comedy TV series, beating shows including Apple TV+’s comedy-drama Ted Lasso.

Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis, however, took home the prize for best actor in a musical or comedy TV series, marking the streamer’s only award in the TV section of the event.

Netflix also won only one award in the TV part, after scooping six in 2021, with Squid Game’s O Yeong-su named best supporting actor in a series, limited series or TV movie.

Elsewhere, Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy historical drama The Underground Railroad beat titles including Mare of Easttown to win the award for best limited series or TV movie, while Michael Keaton took home the prize for best actor in a limited series or TV movie for his performance in Hulu’s drama miniseries Dopesick.

The final award in the TV section of the Golden Globes went to MJ Rodriguez, who picked up best actress in a drama series for her role in FX’s Pose, beating nominees including Elisabeth Moss for The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu).
