SPA hires former Matchbox Pictures exec Samantha Turi as commercial director

Screen Producers Australia (SPA) has appointed former Matchbox Pictures executive Samantha Turi as director of commercial.

SPA CEO Matthew Deaner said the new appointment signals a pivotal time for producers as they respond to shifting global commissioning models and market consolidation, with a heightened need for advocacy and support as they navigate increasingly complex commercial, financing and rights environments.

Turi was most recently director of business and legal affairs at Matchbox Pictures, which last month announced it was shutting down following parent company Universal International Studios’ decision to wind down its operations.

In the new role, Turi will drive SPA’s commercial advocacy and member support, providing strategic guidance on commercial deal-making, regulatory considerations and emerging industry trends.

Prior to Matchbox, Turi worked widely across the Australian television production sector holding business affairs and legal positions at Playmaker Media and FremantleMedia Australia, with expertise in contract negotiation, intellectual property frameworks and commercial risk management.

“Samantha brings deep commercial expertise and a strong understanding of the practical business realities facing Australian producers. Her experience advising on complex production agreements and rights arrangements will enhance SPA’s capacity to support members in building sustainable businesses and accessing new opportunities in the international marketplace,” Deaner said.
