Sony Pictures TV greenlights spin-off series to CBS’s S.W.A.T. led by Shemar Moore

S.W.A.T. follows a police special weapons and tactics team in LA

LA SCREENINGS: Sony Pictures Television (SPT) has greenlit a spin-off from its crime procedural S.W.A.T., which wrapped an eight-episode run on CBS last week.

The new series, S.W.A.T. Exiles, will see Shemar Moore reprising his role as Daniel Harrelson, the leader of a police special weapons and tactics team operating in Los Angeles.

Sony has greenlit the series for 10 episodes and will shop the project to potential buyers. The studio announced the green light at an LA Screenings event on Sunday night.

Development is currently underway, with production set to begin in LA this summer. SPT said the project would preserve jobs “for the 200-person local production crew who have been instrumental to the success of the original series for the last eight seasons.”

In the spin-off, Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits.

Jason Ning will serve as showrunner on the show as part of a renewed overall deal with SPT.

Other exec producers on the series include Neal H Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, Moore and James Scura.
