Showtime falls for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

US premium cable network Showtime is expanding its development slate with a new musical comedy pilot to be directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man).

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is being written by Aline Brosh McKenna (All American Girl) and actor/songwriter Rachel Bloom, with CBS Television Studios producing. The two writers are also attached as exec producers.

The story follows a young, successful lawyer, played by Bloom, who lives in Manhattan before giving up everything as she attempts to find the love of her life. It will feature songs penned by Bloom and is set to start filming in the fall.

David Nevins, Showtime president, said the show was “an exciting change of pace” for his network, which also recently ordered a rock band comedy pilot from Cameron Crowe, JJ Abrams and Warner Bros.

The pilot orders come after Showtime was forced to put its planned comedy series, Happyish, on hold earlier this year after the death of lead actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.
