Red Imp develops Canadian political satire Gov led by YouTube star Julie Nolke

Canadian production company Red Imp Films is developing a political satire series fronted by YouTube comedy star Julie Nolke.

The single-camera comedy, titled Gov, follows an influencer who is appointed Governor General of Canada by a populist prime minister so he can appear more woke. However, the influencer refuses to take the back seat he was hoping for.

Nolke’s TV credits include Run the Burbs and Workin’ Moms, but she is better known for her comedy-focused videos on YouTube. Her YouTube page has more than one million subscribers and has generated more than 208 million views. She was recently named as the Creator of the Year at the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards.

Red Imp Films, which operates out of Toronto and London, is led by Will Jeffs and John Hauber.

Jeffs is a British-Canadian producer and screenwriter who also has acting credits on shows including MGM+’s The Westies and Netflix’s Fubar. Hauber is a Canadian-Argentine-British producer whose film credits include The Cut, starring Orlando Bloom, and documentary feature Broken Country.

Jeffs described Gov as a “Schitt’s Creek meets Veep – a fish-out-of-water comedy in a political arena, with a dose of absurdity a la Superstore.”

Hauber added: “People are opening up to the fact that politics by and large can be quite comical, and it’s OK to laugh at how things operate. More broadly, the demand for comedic series is as strong as it’s ever been.”
