Reality losing out as streamers fall in love with scripted romance, says Ampere

The success of shows such as Bridgerton and Heated Rivalry is causing global streamers to double down on commissioning scripted romance series at the expense of reality dating formats, claims Ampere Analysis.

New research by the UK-based data company shows that scripted shows now account for 83% of first-run romance commissions in the first half of this year.

That is a significant jump from H2 2022, when scripted and reality romance greenlights were almost the same.

Leaning into the genre allows commissioners to target elusive younger audiences. It is particularly popular with viewers aged 18-24, with Ampere’s research showing that 49% of respondents within that demographic watched romantic shows this year.

The growth in scripted romance commissions is underpinned by a rise in book adaptations, which account for more than 40% of scripted romance orders since H1 2025.

Mariana Enriquez Denton Bustinza, senior analyst at Ampere Analysis, said: “Scripted romance shows are currently central in the cultural zeitgeist, and none more so than literary adaptations, including Heated Rivalry, Off Campus and Bridgerton.

“The continued success of these titles has encouraged global streamers to rethink their commissioning approach to new romance content, moving away from reality TV and towards higher-budget scripted shows with established fan bases.

“Romance and its book adaptations target a younger demographic that has become increasingly visible on social media. By tapping into these online communities, streamers improve their show’s chances of success and ensure longevity through sustained fan interactions and commentary.”
