Paramount+ expands Star Trek universe with new Starfleet Academy series

Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017

International streamer Paramount+ is expanding its Star Trek franchise with the greenlight of a new original series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, the series is set to go into production in 2024 with Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serving as co-showrunners and executive producers.

The new iteration of the nearly 60-year-old franchise will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy.

The Star Trek franchise on Paramount+ includes Star Trek: Discovery, which is wrapping up with its fifth season in 2024, and Star Trek: Picard, which is also set to end with its third season.

Earlier this week, Paramount+ announced that two other franchise instalments, Strange New Worlds and adult animated series Lower Decks, had been renewed for their third and fifth seasons, respectively. Another animated show, Star Trek: Prodigy, will return for its second season this winter.

Kurtzman and Landau are exec producing the project alongside Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber. The first episode is written by Violo.

“As we continue to explore more of the Star Trek universe, we’re thrilled to bring Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to fans around the world as the next chapter in this expanding franchise,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios.

“Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau’s vision is a smart and thrilling take that celebrates the core principles of what Star Trek has always stood for, but through the eyes of the next generation of Starfleet’s leaders.”
