New Sherlock Holmes series from Silver Reel backed by Sky, SRF, ARD Degeto

The Death of Sherlock Holmes stars Rafe Spall and Deleila Piasko

Following an International Emmy win last year for young-adult drama Fallen, Zurich-based Silver Reel has partnered with distributor Sphere Abacus, European pay TV operator Sky, Switzerland’s SRF and Germany’s ARD Degeto on its next English-language drama.

The Death of Sherlock Holmes explores an untold chapter in the life of the fictional detective and will star Rafe Spall (Under Salt Marsh, Trying) and Deleila Piasko (The Exposure, Transatlantic). It is set to premiere in 2027.

Created by Claudia Bluemhuber (Fallen), André Küttel (Platzspitzbaby) and Pierre Monnard (Winter Palace), and inspired by the characters of Arthur Conan Doyle, the series has started production. Küttel and Simone Schmid (Die Beschatter) are writing the series, with Monnard and Bluemhuber directing.

The series begins with Holmes’ apparent death at the Reichenbach Falls and follows the three years between his disappearance in 1891 and his return in 1894. While the world believes the master detective died in his final duel with Professor Moriarty, The Death of Sherlock Holmes imagines what happened during that period – a chapter that Arthur Conan Doyle left untold.

Silver Reel is producing the Swiss-German-Belgian coproduction with Sky Switzerland, SRF, ARD Degeto and Umedia. Sphere Abacus handles international distribution.

Sky will carry the series exclusively in the UK and Ireland. The show will stream on Sky in Switzerland and Germany, while SRF will broadcast it in Switzerland and ARD Degeto in Germany. The project is supported by FFF Bayern and the IDM Film Commission.
