Netflix plans 10 original productions in Brazil this year, including films, reality shows and docs

Netflix is planning 10 original productions in Brazil this year, including series, films, reality shows and documentaries.

Among the featured titles is Emergência Radioativa, a miniseries inspired by the largest radiological accident outside a nuclear plant, which occurred in Goiânia in 1987. The series is created by Gustavo Lipsztein, directed by Fernando Coimbra and produced by Gullane.

The platform also announced the start of filming for Fúria, a series created by Igor Verde and Gustavo Bragança, directed by José Henrique Fonseca and produced by Zola Filmes. The series delves into the world of MMA to portray the journey of a young fighter in search of his identity.

Docu-reality show My Korean Lover, produced by Floresta, follows five Brazilian women as they travel to Seoul to discover if their relationships can survive distance, cultural differences and a new routine.

The slate was announced by Elisabetta Zenatti, VP of Netflix content in Brazil, at the Rio2C event being held in Rio de Janeiro between May 27 and June 1.

Joining these projects is the previously announced Brasil 70 – A Saga do Tri, a miniseries from O2 Filmes that relives the journey of the Brazilian national football team in the 1970 World Cup. It is directed by Pedro and Paulo Morelli.

Netflix also announced two football-themed documentary series: one about Ronaldinho Gaúcho, coproduced by Canal Azul, and another about Santos FC in the context of Neymar Jr’s comeback, produced by Improbable Media and Ginga Pictures.

Meanwhile, Marcha das Onças is Netflix’s first nature documentary in Latin America, created, sourced and produced in Brazil. Directed by Lawrence Wahba and coproduced by Duo2 and Bonne Pioche, the doc follows three jaguars in the Pantanal and uses cutting-edge technology to showcase their challenges and the importance of their preservation.

In the film world, Netflix will be launching a Brazilian horror film for the first time, called Fazenda Colonial, which tells the story of a group of friends’ on a trip to an old hacienda, which ends in a sinister reunion with the past. It is coproduced by Kromaki and Panda Filmes, and directed by Marcela Mariz and Renata di Carmo.

Another film is a thriller inspired by true story of Elize Matsunaga, a Brazilian woman who murdered her husband. It is directed by Vellas, written by Raphael Montes and produced by Boutique Filmes.

The streamer is also producing a film spin-off to its Sintonia drama series, directed by Johnny Araújo and produced by Gullane, that focuses on the character of Nando.

Elsewhere, Netflix is launching a Spanish version of its reality series Too Hot to Handle. Titled Playing with Fire: Spain, the Spanish version is produced by Fremantle Spain and will have eight episodes.

Too Hot to Handle was developed by British prodco Talkback in collaboration with Thames, both Fremantle labels.

Netflix has also greenlit two original films in Argentina. The first, We Left It Here, is produced by Kenya Films, directed by Hernán Goldfrid and written by Emanuel Diez. The film is about a pragmatic psychoanalyst who loses faith in conventional psychological methods and begins to overstep his boundaries with his patients.

The second film, The Last Giant, is directed and written by Marcos Carnevale and produced by Leyenda Films and Kuarzo International Films. The story revolves around a charismatic tour guide who unexpectedly reunites with his father who abandoned him 28 years ago.

Elsewhere, the global streamer is to premiere two projects starring actor Dennis Trillo (Mulawin), both produced by Philippine prodco GMA Pictures.

The first, Green Bones, is a feature-length drama scheduled to stream around the world on June 19. Produced by GMA Pictures, GMA Public Affairs and Brightburn Entertainment, it stars Dennis Trillo and Ruru Madrid.

Green Bones tells the story of a soon-to-be-released prisoner whose release is put in jeopardy by a newly assigned prison guard who makes it his personal mission to keep him behind bars.

The second title, Everything About My Wife, is a romantic comedy produced by GMA Pictures, CreaZion Studios and Glimmer Studio Philippines.

Scheduled to debut on May 29, it features Trillo as an unhappily married man who struggles to end his marriage to his wife.

It has also renewed its UK reality series At Home with the Furys for a second season.

Produced by All3Media-owned UK prodco Optomen, it continues to follow the life of former world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, as he announces his retirement from boxing and embraces family life with his wife and their seven kids.

The creative directors are Nick Hornby and Tina Flintoff and the series is executive produced by Laura Leigh.
