Moonbug acquires Oddbods creator One Animation in Singapore

Computer-animated non-dialogue comedy Oddbods

London-based children’s company Moonbug Entertainment has acquired Singaporean studio One Animation, the creator of kids’ series Oddbods.

Moonbug, which itself was acquired by Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs’ venture Candle Media last year, will look to expand Oddbods’ global distribution footprint and grow the brand into new formats, products and experiences.

First launched in 2013, Oddbods is a computer-animated, non-dialogue comedy series that follows a group of seven creatures in colourful furry suits as they survive the perils of everyday life, where ordinary situations spiral into extraordinary events.

It airs in over 180 countries on channels and platforms including CITV in the UK, Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video. It also has its own YouTube channels.

The acquisition of One Animation is part of Moonbug’s strategy to acquire existing children’s content which it can then expand and build into global franchises. Oddbods joins IP including CoComelon, Blippi and Little Baby Bum on Moonbug’s slate, in addition to its latest acquisition, YouTube brand Little Angel.

Other programmes in One Animation’s catalogue include Antiks, Insectibles and Rob the Robot. Post-acquisition, One Animation’s team will join Moonbug but will remain in Singapore, continuing to develop and produce its content.

“We continue on our strategy to find the best kids’ shows in the world and bring them into our portfolio,” said Renè Rechtman, Moonbug’s co-founder and CEO.

“One Animation’s creative storytelling and international appeal provide us with even stronger credentials as we continue on our journey to be the leading digital-first kids’ entertainment company in the world.”

Mayer and Staggs added: “One Animation is a fantastic addition, not only for its successful franchises, but also for its capabilities and scale, and the opportunity to further enhance a dynamic Singapore-based hub for Moonbug as a rapidly growing family entertainment powerhouse.”
