Mediawan takes CJ ENM’s supernatural thriller Monstrous for Insomnia streamer

Monstrous debuted on Sky in the UK

France’s Mediawan has acquired South Korean supernatural thriller Monstrous for its horror-themed subscription streaming channel Insomnia in France and other parts of Europe.

Having made its debut in Europe on Sky in the UK, the CJ ENM-distributed series will launch on Insomnia on September 1 in France, Monaco, Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

Originally launched on CJ ENM’s streaming platform TVing in Korea, Monstrous is a six-episode series revolving around archaeologists who unearth a colossal Buddha statue in a quiet rural town, setting off a series of cataclysmic events through a centuries-old curse.

The series, helmed by creator Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan, Hellbound), is produced by Korea’s Studio Dragon and features a cast including Koo Kyo-hwan and Shin Hyun-been.

Sonia Latoui, deputy general manager in charge of content at Mediawan, said: “We have been following the evolution of the quality and originality of Korean content for several years now and we are very aware of the potential.

“The arrival of the extraordinary series Monstrous on our streaming horror movie service Insomnia is the beginning of a long adventure with South Korean expertise in horror and fantasy stories.”
