Live-action adaptation of Last Kids on Earth books gets pilot order from Disney+

Disney+ and Disney Channel have handed a pilot episode order to a live-action adaptation of Max Brallier’s The Last Kids on Earth book series.

The new project comes from writers, showrunners and exec producers Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux (The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill, Gotham Knights), with Kevin Tancharoen (The Book of Boba Fett, The Brothers Sun) directing.

Other non-writing exec producers include Brallier and Blue Ant Studios’ Hillary Zwick Turner, Tancharoen, Jennifer Twiner McCarron and Matt Hornburg.

Brallier’s illustrated books, which are set in the aftermath of an apocalypse, were first published in 2015. They were previously adapted by Thunderbird Entertainment-owned Atomic Cartoons as an animated series for Netflix, which ran for three seasons from 2019 to 2021. Thunderbird was subsequently acquired by Blue Ant Media in an C$89m deal that closed in January.

The latest iteration of the property follows a mismatched group of teens who must band together and attempt to prevent the end of the world after monsters overrun the sleepy town of Wakefield.
