HBO revives Lena Dunham’s Girls with five-episode order

HBO’s Girls finished its initial six-season run in 2017

Skydance-owned US network HBO has ordered a revival season of its Lena Dunham-created dramedy Girls.

The show will return for a five-episode run, with production set to begin in 2027.

Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah Horvath, who in the original iteration of the series was an aspiring writer navigating relationships and career in Brooklyn, New York.

Other cast members returning for the revival include Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells. Judd Apatow is also returing as an executive producer.

The original iteration of the show ran for six seasons and wrapped in 2017. Plot details of the new season have not yet been revealed, though Dunham said she was only interested in reviving the show if there was a “specific story we were burning to tell.”

Girls is created, written and directed by Dunham, who will executive produce the new episodes alongside Apatow for Apatow Productions, Ilene S Landress and Michael P Cohen for Good Thing Going. Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells are co-executive producers.

This is the second major greenlight made by HBO since it officially came under the ownership of Skydance last week. The network also announced an eight-episode Crazy Rich Asians drama series last week.

“We’re thrilled to have Lena turn her gaze from the tumult of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning forty,” said Amy Gravitt, executive VP, head of HBO and HBO Max comedy programming.

“To say the world has changed since we last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa, and Elijah is a massive understatement, but we know fans – old and new – will be happy to see how they’ve grown and relieved to see that they’re still the ‘Girls’ we knew way back when.”
