HBO orders Crazy Rich Asians television series

Warner Bros’ 2018 movie adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians

HBO has greenlit an eight-episode Crazy Rich Asians drama series, which will pick up after the events of the 2018 feature film.

The series, which is being greenlit just days after HBO officially came under the ownership of David Ellison’s Skydance, is being coproduced by HBO and Warner Bros Television.

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside author Kevin Kwan, director Jon M Chu, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. The series, like the 2018 hit film, is based on Kwan’s bestselling novels.

Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng will reprise their roles, with Michelle Yeoh returning in a recurring capacity.

The greenlight comes a little over 18 months after it first emerged that a series adaptation of the story was in development with HBO.

Lim is executive producing via her production company 100 Tigers, in addition to Chu (Electric Somewhere); Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force; Chloe Dan and Jeannine Tang for SK Global Entertainment; and Naia Cucukov Richards.
