LA-based production studio Gunpowder & Sky has brought in a pair of new development executives as it looks to expand its scripted and unscripted slates.

Catti Alvarez, formerly the director of development at Fly on the Wall Entertainment, has joined the company as VP of unscripted development, while Natalie Gergely, most recently the director of development at Abominable Pictures, has joined Gunpowder & Sky as VP of scripted development.

Alvarez will report to Art Lyons, senior VP of unscripted development, and Gergely will report to CEO Van Toffler.

Founded in 2016, Gunpowder & Sky is behind projects including the three-part documentary Sometimes When We Touch (Paramount+) which explores the history of soft rock; Rudolph Herzog-directed doc Last Exit: Space (Discovery+); Call Me Miss Cleo (HBO Max), about the rise, fall and reinvention of controversial and revered 90s television psychic Miss Cleo; and Gaming WallStreet, a two-part doc exploring the historic 2021 short squeeze of GameStop.

During her time at Fly on the Wall Entertainment, Alvarez helped shepherd titles including Million Dollar Mile (CBS), Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis (Freevee), Crime Scene Kitchen (Fox) and various YouTube live-streamed events such as Katy Perry: Witness World Wide, Will Smith: The Jump and Taylor Swift Lover’s Lounge. She worked previously at Spike TV and Creative Arts Agency.

Gergely spent almost four years at Abominable Pictures, which is behind shows including Murderville, Medical Police and Wet Hot American Summer, all for Netflix, and Childrens Hospital on Adult Swim. Prior to Abominable Pictures, she was manager of original programming and development at Comedy Central.

Last month, Gunpowder & Sky agreed a first-look deal with Amazon-owned audiobook and podcast service Audible. The multi-project agreement gives Audible first refusal options for the Gunpowder & Sky’s slate of audio projects across music, pop culture, sports, scripted, wellness, investigative and true crime genres.

“With our growing slate of narrative and unscripted features, series and podcasts, it was time to add two more innovative, tireless and talented bodies to the team to keep pushing us to take risks with provocative storytelling,” said Toffler.
