Irish prodco Danú Media (Ros na Rún) has secured the rights to turn Lisa McInerney’s novel The Glorious Heresies into a crime drama.

First published in 2015, the Cork-set book follows a young man as he struggles with family issues and the Irish criminal underworld.

It weaves together the lives of five interconnected characters, each dealing with personal demons, moral dilemmas and the harsh realities of life in a city riddled with violence, addiction and social unrest.

The development of The Glorious Heresies is being supported by Screen Ireland through the Creative Futures Fund.

County Galway-based Danú Media was founded in 2015 by co-CEOs John Brady and Siobhán Ní Ghadhra. It produces scripted film and TV projects such as Irish soap Ros na Rún, which airs on Irish-language television channel TG4.

John Brady, CEO of Danú Media, said: “When we first read Glorious Heresies, we were immediately captivated by Lisa’s lyrical narrative. It felt fresh, bold and exactly what we were looking for.

“We’re incredibly excited and grateful to be trusted with this project, and we’re looking forward to working with Lisa on bringing this story to the screen.”

McInerney said: “I am so excited to work with the Danú team on bringing this very Irish saga to the screen.

“It’s such a privilege to be able revisit and reimagine this story for a new audience, and to be able to spend time again with my cast of misfits and chancers. I’m really looking forward to this new chapter.”
