Ex-Globo executive Carolina Iacia joins Lat Am reading platform Skeelo

Latin American digital reading platform Skeelo has hired former Globo executive Carolina Iacia as its content director, leading original productions and coproductions.

Carolina Iacia

Iacia, who has 20 years of experience in the media and entertainment industry, had been serving as head of format acquisition at Globo and announced her departure from the Brazilian giant last week.

Skeelo was created in 2019 with the aim of placing reading at the centre of contemporary life and democratising access to books.

The company is currently one of the leading digital reading ecosystems in Latin America and, through its Skeelo and Skoob platforms, has over 2.8 million monthly active users and reports 22 million downloads and over one billion minutes of reading.

The addition of Iacia is part of Skeelo’s strategy to expand its activity within the content and entertainment ecosystem and bring books closer to different formats, experiences and audiences.

Among her responsibilities will be strengthening the company’s relationship with the publishing market, developing content acquisition and performance strategies, and generating new opportunities for intellectual properties, including original projects and coproductions with partners.

“I’m joining Skeelo highly motivated by the opportunity to work in an ecosystem that connects literature, technology and entertainment. Throughout my career, I’ve learned that good stories can find different paths and formats when we bring together the right people and build good businesses. At Skeelo, I want to put that experience at the service of the publishing market, our partners and, most importantly, our readers,” said Iacia.

With a background encompassing production, programming, distribution, content acquisition and licensing, as well as the negotiation of IP and literary adaptations, Iacia developed much of her career at Globo, where she held various strategic positions until becoming head of format acquisitions, live events and literary adaptations.

During that time she led the acquisition of the rights to works that gave rise to productions such as Territórios – Sob o domínio do crime (Globoplay), inspired by the book Milicianos by Rafael Soares; Amor perfeito, based on Marcelino Pão e Vinho by José María Sánchez-Silva; Paraíso perdido, a telenovela inspired by the work of Nelson Rodrigues; and Arrastados, an adaptation of the book by Daniela Arbex currently in development.

Her experience also includes negotiating IP and entertainment brands such as Big Brother, The Voice, The Masked Singer, Rock in Rio, Lollapalooza, The Town, Todo Mundo no Rio and the carnivals of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Before Globo, the executive was part of the Oi team and participated in the launch of its pay TV operation, reinforcing her experience in content distribution and in the telecoms market.

“Carolina joins Skeelo at a time when we are expanding our presence in the content market and seeking new ways to connect books and readers. Her experience brings together skills that will be very important for this next stage: knowledge of the publishing market, negotiation of intellectual property and a broad vision of how content can adopt new formats and reach different audiences. We are very happy to have her on board as we build this,” said Rodrigo Meinberg, CEO of Skeelo.
