Danish political drama Borgen is set to return in 2022, with a fourth season being developed by Danish pubcaster DR and global streaming giant Netflix.

The series first aired in 2010 on DR and ran for three seasons until 2013, becoming part of a Scandi Noir trend along with The Killing and The Bridge which fuelled demand for subtitled drama around Europe.

The new season is being developed by DR in collaboration with SAM Productions and produced alongside Netflix. The eight-part season will be made available on Netflix globally in 2022 after being shown on DR. The streamer will also show the first three seasons from later this year.

Sidse Babett Knudsen will reprise her role as former prime minister Birgitte Nyborg and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen will return as journalist Katrine Fønsmark.

The plot finds Nyborg recently appointed as foreign minister after a long period in opposition. She is challenged by a number of events that end up threatening both her position in government and Denmark’s relationship with its closest allies.

Writer Adam Price said the fourth season would be a return to the classic Borgen universe but would also reflect the times in which we currently live.
