Disney orders Spanish original Balenciaga alongside Spiderwick Chronicles series

Movistar+ police thriller Antidisturbios is set to join Disney+

The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) has unveiled a host of new content heading for Disney+, including its first scripted original title from Spain.

Balenciaga (working title) tells the story of the son of a seamstress and a fisherman who goes on to become one of the most prominent fashion designers of all time.

Created by Lourdes Iglesias and Jose Mari Goenaga, Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi (The Endless Trench), the limited series is described by Disney as a story about the search for identity while overcoming adversity and defying social conventions through changing times.

It brings the number of titles greenlit in Europe to 21, consisting of 16 scripted and five unscripted series from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.

Disney EMEA has acquired Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Movistar+’s Spanish police thriller Antidisturbios and will launch it on Disney+ in the coming year.

Last week TWDC vowed to step up its investment in local and regional content for Disney+ after the streamer experienced its slowest growth period yet.

The Mouse House is aiming to source, develop and produce a slate of 60 originals by 2024 from around EMEA, as part of a wider strategy to bring more original content to Disney+.

Out of the US, Disney has ordered live-action series The Spiderwick Chronicles, based on the books of the same name previously adapted by Nickelodeon Movies in 2008.

The series will be made with Paramount Television Studios and Disney-owned 20th Television and is described as a modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure.

Baymax, meanwhile, is a spin-off to Big Hero 6 and marks Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first ever animated series. It will stream exclusively on Disney+ from next summer.

Disney has also rebooted Cheaper by the Dozen as a new movie from Gabrielle Union and Zach Braff; ordered Disenchanted, a sequel to the film Enchanted, starring Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey; and announced Rodrick Rules, a spin-off to Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Other new titles coming to Disney+ include Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, Better Nate Than Ever, Hocus Pocus 2, Pinocchio, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, Sneakerella, The Proud Family: Louder & Prouder, Zootopia+, Tiana and Cars on the Road.

Marvel Studios originals in the pipeline include Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Ms Marvel, Echo, Ironheart, Agatha: House of Harkness, Secret Invasion, X-Men ’97, Spider-Man: Freshman Year and Marvel Zombies.

Meanwhile, throughout November and December this year, Disney+ in the UK will launch a new show or movie every week, including Marvel’s Hawkeye, Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, Encanto and National Geographic’s The Rescue.
