Cameras roll on Sky drama The Lovers from Drama Republic, Sky Studios

Production is underway on new Sky Original drama The Lovers, starring Roisin Gallagher (The Fall, The Dry) and Johnny Flynn (Beast, Emma).

Roisin Gallagher

Produced by UK prodco Drama Republic, in association with Sky Studios, the new 6×30’ series “is about love, connection and finding your soulmate in the most unlikely of places,” according to Sky.

Written by award-winning playwright David Ireland (Cyprus Avenue, Ulster American) and directed by Bafta winner Justin Martin (Together, Prima Facie), the “darkly comic, romantic drama” will air on Sky Atlantic and Sky’s streaming service Now in 2023.

NBCUniversal Global Distribution, which shares parent company Comcast with Sky, will handle international sales.

Johnny Flynn

The Lovers follows the relationship between a foul-mouthed Belfast supermarket worker (played by Gallagher) and a self-centred, political broadcaster (Flynn) who has what looks to be a perfect London life. It also stars Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones, Holding).

The series was commissioned by Gabriel Silver, director of drama commissioning at Sky Studios for Zai Bennett, MD of content at Sky UK.

Roanna Benn and Rebecca de Souza are exec producers for Drama Republic, with commissioning editors Liz Lewin and Manpreet Dosanjh as executive producers for Sky Studios. Hannah Pescod also serves as executive producer, with Chris Martin as producer.

“David has written the most unique, funny and heart-warming scripts and we look forward to shooting against the iconic backdrops of Belfast and London,” said Sky Studios exec producers Lewin and Dosanjh.
