Cameras roll on Paramount+ Aussie romantic drama Two Years Later

Two Years Later stars Phoebe Tonkin and Brenton Thwaites

Paramount+ and Queensland-based production company Hoodlum have begun shooting an eight-part romantic drama set during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Production on Two Years Later has commenced in Brisbane with actors Phoebe Tonkin (Boy Swallows Universe) and Brenton Thwaites (Pirates of the Caribbean) in the lead roles of thirty-somethings who reunite after their potential romance is thwarted by the pandemic.

The series was created by local Queensland-based screenwriter Pete Bridges and is being directed by Emma Freeman.

Paramount Australia senior VP content and programming, Daniel Monaghan, said the series “celebrates the messiness of modern dating” and described it as “intimate, honest and refreshingly grounded.”

Speaking to C21 in March, Monaghan said romantic dramas were among the genres he was looking to add to the streamer’s slate of five-to-six local originals it invests in per year.

The Paramount+ original has attracted support from Screen Australia and Screen Queensland’s Screen Finance Fund and Post, Digital and Visual Effect (PDV) Incentive, with Banijay Rights taking on international sales.

Hoodlum chief content officer and producer Tracey Vieira said: “Partnering with Paramount+ and Banijay allows us to tell this deeply relatable, funny, and heartfelt story about connection, identity and love in a post-pandemic world.”
