Brazil’s Globo joins forces with Telemundo Studios to develop and coproduce series, films

Manuel Belmar and Javier Pons

Globo and Telemundo Studios, a division of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop and coproduce premium scripted content.

Under the agreement, Globo and Telemundo will collaborate on the development and coproduction of original films and series to be released as Globoplay Originals in Brazil and through Telemundo’s streaming and broadcast platforms in the US.

Although the titles, formats and production models are still being defined, the focus is on creating high-value IP with broad international appeal.

“This collaboration marks an important step in expanding our narrative reach and building a creative bridge between Brazil and the Hispanic world,” said Javier Pons, chief content officer and head of Telemundo Studios Enterprises.

“With our experience and capacity to produce content with global impact, this partnership will strengthen our editorial line-up and pave the way for premium fiction projects that connect with audiences across borders.”

Globo and Telemundo Studios have a history of coproducing Spanish-language adaptations of iconic Globo telenovelas, such as Vale Tudo (Anything Goes), O Clone (The Clone) and Fina Estampa (Husband for Rent), as well as series such as Amores roubados (Playing with Fire).

“This memorandum of understanding with Telemundo Studios reinforces Globo’s investment in the creation of scripted intellectual property that captivates audiences around the world,” explained Manuel Belmar, director of digital products at Globo.

“By combining our strengths, we are convinced that we can develop compelling stories that not only resonate in Brazil and the United States but also expand our international reach at a time when global storytelling is more relevant than ever.”

Since last year, Globo has been promoting an international coproduction strategy through which it has signed agreements with numerous companies, such as Beta Film, with whom it signed a multi-year partnership that will begin with the drama Discipline (working title); Fremantle, for the Brazilian series Crime Inc; and Gaumont, for a drama exploring the world of haute couture.

“Content is our opportunity to differentiate ourselves. That’s why 70% of Globoplay’s content is Brazilian. But content also needs to travel and there are multiple paths to achieving a global presence. And that’s where coproduction plays a fundamental role,” said Belmar at C21’s Content Americas in January.

“Without losing the essence of what we do, which is serving the Brazilian audience, we can learn how to generate content more suitable for the international market. That’s why coproductions will be key to Globoplay’s long-term growth.”

Since Pons’ arrival, Telemundo Studios has also been forging similar agreements, such as its partnership with Federation Spain to produce the Spanish SkyShowtime original Nails and the adaptation of Spanish period drama Velvet.
