Big Shot Pictures buys into Alvin & the Chipmunks and preps digital-first reboot

Alvin & the Chipmunks has been adapted many times since its creation in 1958

Former Paramount co-CEO Brian Robbins and his animation company Big Shot Pictures are behind a multi-media reboot of classic kids’ brand Alvin & the Chipmunks.

The US-based next-generation studio has acquired a 25% stake in the family-friendly franchise through a partnership with brand owner Bagdasarian Productions.

Robbins’ strategy is to reintroduce the squeaky-voiced rodents to young audiences through a slate of digital-first content. Big Shot Pictures will produce YouTube and social media videos featuring Alvin and his friends as influencers, reacting to trends, news and viral clips.

After establishing the IP in the online world, Big Shot then plans to produce a theatrical movie in time for the Chipmunks’ 70th birthday celebrations in 2028.

Alvin & the Chipmunks was created by Ross Bagdasarian in 1958 and has since featured in numerous TV series, films, toys and merchandise ranges.

Robbins launched Big Shot earlier this year, with the company landing a first-look theatrical deal with Sony. Other franchises the company is currently developing include an adaptation of Kay Thompson’s Eloise book series, an anime series with influencer IShowSpeed and a shortform animated series based on YouTube personalities The Bucket List Family.

Robbins said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Bagdasarians to bring Alvin and the crew into the 21st century with the scale, creativity and energy they deserve.”

The Wall Street Journal was first to report the news.
