BBC secures distribution for Planet Earth film

SHOWCASE NEWS: BBC Worldwide has secured distribution deals in France, Spain and Switzerland for its forthcoming feature-length natural history movie Planet Earth, thus securing all the finance for the $15m film.

Gaumont will distribute the big screen film in France, Wanda in Spain and Frenetic in Switzerland. The moves follow the long-term agreement between BBC Worldwide and Germany’s Greenlight Media to bring the best of the BBC’s Natural History Unit output to the big screen.

Planet Earth (working title) is directed by Alastair Fothergill and is described as “a 90-minute epic journey of life through the seasons, from the Arctic spring to winter in the Antarctic.” The film is shot in high-definition and took three years to make. Alix Tidmarsh, producer of Planet Earth, said: “We are looking forward to working with Greenlight and distributors around the world to bring this spectacular film to the widest possible global audience.”

Planet Earth will follow the international success of the BBC’s oceanic documentary film Deep Blue, which was distributed in more than 20 territories. Based on the TV doc series Blue Planet, it has generated US$25m in income to date and has become the highest-rating documentary film in Germany and broke box office records in Japan. Miramax plans to launch the film in the US later this year.
