Amazon launches MGM+ streamer across Europe with Lionsgate volume deal

US tech giant Amazon will relaunch MGM’s international streaming service as MGM+ International across Europe later this month, and has secured a volume deal with Lionsgate to bolster its content catalogue.

Amazon spent US$8.45bn on US studio MGM last year and rebranded its Epix service as MGM+ in the US in January.

MGM+ International will now launch in Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands this weekend.

In support of that, MGM+ has concluded a content deal with Lionsgate for a package of premium films and television series, which will include series from both Lionsgate and subsidiary Starz.

Among the content is the Power franchise, Black Sails, Black Mafia Family, Mad Men and Nashville.

Lionsgate+ subscribers who signed up via Prime Video Channels will now get access to MGM+ International and will be able to watch Lionsgate content alongside an additional line-up of movies from MGM Studios.

“Following the relaunch of MGM+ in the US at the start of the year, we have seen significant growth in subscribers,” said Chris Brearton, VP of Prime Video Studios corporate strategy.

“Now MGM’s international streaming services will follow suit and relaunch as MGM+ International in key countries where we are making further content investments to capitalise on the strength of the iconic brand and accelerate our growth as a premium international SVoD service.

“Our strategic deal with Lionsgate marks a further commitment to the MGM+ brand by Amazon.”
