Acorn TV, M-Net announce S2 of SA-filmed mystery Recipes for Love and Murder
Recipes for Love and Murder is returning for a second series
MIP AFRICA: Acorn TV and M-Net have said the second season of their South Africa-set small-town murder series Recipes for Love and Murder will be fiery with a brand-new mystery waiting to be solved.
The first season did well for MultiChoice’s pay TV platform DStv in South Africa but fared even better, ratings-wise, internationally – which has directly led to a second season that wrapped filming a few months ago in South Africa’s Western Cape province and Cape Town.
Recipes for Love and Murder is directed by Jozua Malherbe and Karen Jeynes and produced by Thierry Cassuto in a partnership between AMC Networks’ Acorn TV, M-Net parent MultiChoice and Both Worlds Pictures, in co-operation with Germany’s Global Screen.
Acorn TV holds distribution rights to the series for the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, while MultiChoice hold the rights for Africa, with Global Screen selling to the rest of the world.
The second season will start when a massive fire engulfs the small town of Eden. It triggers a fateful series of events and a multiple murder investigation that unearths the town’s darkest secrets.Joining the returning leads Maria Doyle Kennedy, Tony Kgoroge and Kylie Fisher in S2 are Wynand Ferreira, Gerard Rudolph and Hlubi Mboya.
The first season of Recipes for Love & Murder was chosen for the Berlinale Market & CoProduction series selections at the Berlin Film Festival and nominated at the Venice Television Awards, the South African Film & Television Awards and the South African Writers Guild Awards.
The drama is based on the series of Tannie Maria Mystery novels by best-selling South African author Sally Andrew.
“The cast and crew of the second season of Recipes for Love and Murder are cooking up something truly magical at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains in the Cape,” said Waldimar Pelser, M-Net director of premium channels at MultiChoice, announcing the renewal during Mip Africa. “This season doubles down on mystery, intrigue and drama and we can’t wait to share it with our viewers.”
Catherine Mackin, Acorn Media Enterprises MD, added: “Recipes is a uniquely delicious adventure with sizzling new mysteries cooking up this season.”
Thierry Cassuto, executive producer at Both Worlds Pictures, said: “We are confident the wait has been worth it, as this season raises the stakes in every way, with more intricate mysteries, intriguing new characters, and Aunt Maria compelled to finally confront her past.”
