3net goes native with Civil War miniseries

3D channel 3net will next month air a four-part original miniseries about the American Civil War, billed as the world’s first native 3D documentary.

Fields of Valor: The Civil War (fka The Civil War 3D) will debut on the US channel on December 3, followed by a 2D and 3D rerun the following day of the first instalment on Discovery-owned Velocity and Military Channel.

The 4×60′ doc, from Tower Productions, includes stereoscopic images from the time of the war that were recently released by the US Library of Congress.

“Recent advancements in 3D production have allowed us to get much ‘closer’ to this period in our history and offer a uniquely personal and immersive telling of the conflict that simply wasn’t possible before,” said 3net president and CEO Tom Cosgrove.

The channel – a joint venture from Discovery Communications, Sony and Imax – first unveiled the project back in April.
