Mondo TV shifts into young-adult drama

MIPCOM: Mondo TV in Italy and its Latin American arm are moving into drama for young adults with an English-language sci-fi series set in a post-apocalyptic world.

2050 (13×60′) is a coproduction between US-based VIP 2000 TV, Mondo TV Iberoamerica and South American production and post-production company Casablanca.

Aimed at an audience aged 18 and over, the show is set in a world where messages from the past bring hope to the people of a terrible future, Mondo TV said.

Roxana Rotundo, CEO of VIP 2000 TV, said: “The concept of 2050 was created with an eye to all the fast changes that the entertainment media is experiencing. It is really a 360° product, one that will work for TV, video games, licensing, the internet – in fact, all media.”

The cast of the series, which includes Clara Alvarado (La Casa de Papel), will be drawn from the US, Canada, Europe and Latin America. Filmed in 8K, the first season is in production and is due to launch in 2019.

During a press conference at Mipcom, Mondo TV also previewed animated eco-adventure series MeteoHeroes (52×7′), which follows a group of special kids who can control the weather.

A coproduction between Mondo TV and the Epson Weather Centre, it is set to launch in spring 2020 and addresses the issue of global warming, Mondo TV said.
