Hulu moves mountains to take Oscar winner

Oscar-winning doc Free Solo follows climber Alex Honnold

US streamer Hulu has acquired Free Solo, the National Geographic film that won best documentary feature at this year’s Academy Awards.

The doc follows solo climber Alex Honnold as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream of climbing El Capitan, the 3,200ft peak in Yosemite National Park, without ropes.

The film comes from documentary maker Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, photographer and mountaineer Jimmy Chin and National Geographic Documentary Films.

“Free Solo is a true masterpiece that combines awe-inspiring camerawork with the kind of authentic storytelling that Hulu viewers love,” said Lisa Holme, VP of content acquisition at Hulu.

Free Solo joined other acquired docs available to stream on Hulu yesterday, such as RBG and Three Identical Strangers, as well as the streamer’s original docs Fyre Fraud and the Oscar-nominated Minding the Gap.
