Disney+ reveals Star line-up

Disney+ has revealed the full line-up of its Star brand ahead of its launch on the streaming service in the UK and Ireland on February 23.

Star has been billed as a general entertainment channel and will offer more drama series and comedies targeted at adults.

Part of the standard Disney+ package, Star will join the Disney+ line-up of content strands that currently comprises Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic.

Upon launch, it will offer more than 75 TV series, in excess of 270 movies and a slate of four exclusive Star Originals.

Original productions for Star in Europe will include Big Sky, from David E Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Undoing); Love Simon spin-off series Love Victor, written by This is Us duo Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger; and adult animated sitcom Solar Opposites, co-created by Justin Roiland (Rick & Morty) and Mike McMahan.

Drama series Helstrom, executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski, Karim Zreik and Jeph Loeb, will also be available next month. The show was originally created for Disney-owned streamer Hulu.

Other projects premiering in 2021 are drama series Dopesick and The Dropout, new content from the Kardashian-Jenners and a slate of FX originals, including The Old Man.

Viewers will also be able to watch content from Disney subsidiaries ABC, Freeform, FX, 20th Century Studios, 20th Television and Touchstone. This includes Grey’s Anatomy, 24, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, Lost, Family Guy, Atlanta, Black-ish, Scandal and Dollface.

Films such as The Favourite, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Pretty Woman, Die Hard 2, The Devil Wears Prada and Moulin Rouge will also stream from February.

In addition, new parental controls will be added on the same day as Star’s launch, with features including the ability to set limits on access to content for specific profiles based on content age ratings and the option to add a PIN to lock profiles with access to mature content.

Star on Disney+ will be available in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland plus Australia, New Zealand and Canada from February 23.

Its arrival will coincide with an increase in the Disney+ subscription fee from £5.99 (US$8.20) a month to £7.99 for new customers in the UK, with existing subscribers remaining on the lower rate until August 23.
