National Geographic’s Tom McDonald to present future strategy as Content London strengthens its commitment to unscripted

Tom McDonald, executive VP at National Geographic Content, is the first speaker announced for Content London as the event prepares to double its commitment to unscripted entertainment.

Running from November 30 to December 3, Content London will focus on how to adapt and thrive in The New Content Economy.

McDonald will speak as part of the supersized Unscripted: Inside Formats, Factual and Documentary track, which will connect the global business to facilitate fresh commissions, partnerships and new programming. The exec, who has a global remit, will outline his strategy, priorities and collaboration opportunities.

McDonald oversees television, streaming, editorial, digital and social for Nat Geo across all platforms, including Disney+ and Hulu. He leads content teams in Washington DC, New York, LA and London. Since joining in 2022, he has helped drive a bold content strategy that has received recognition from the Emmys, BAFTA, RTS, Critics’ Choice, Peabody and Wildscreen. Since 2025, he has been chair of the Grierson Trust, the charity supporting documentary making and documentary makers.
Before Nat Geo, McDonald spent a decade at the BBC in senior commissioning and production roles, latterly as MD of factual production for BBC Studios. He also brings deep experience in the independent sector, having worked as a producer, series producer and executive producer for some of the world’s leading companies.
